The Republic of Guatemala is situated in the top north of Central America, covering a surface area of 108,889 square kilometres, which consists out of 106,390 km2 terrestrial surface and the other part, 2,500 km2, consists out of water (lakes, lagoons and rivers).
The population exists out of 11,678,411 inhabitants which are divided in 22 ethnic groups of who the Maya and the Ladino are the most predominant groups. The capital city, divided in 22 departments, is located in the altiplano in the central Sierra Madre at an altitude of 1,499 meters above sea level.
