This area is the easiest to visit to enjoy large plates of sea food, drink refreshing coconuts, and get a great suntan, as well as to take pleasure in the sunset or help out with one of the environmental projects run by the Center for Conservational Studies.
El Zotz: This archaeological site in the Reserva de Biosfera Maya, west of Parque Nacional Tikal, is called Zotz and means bat in many Mayan languages. Many bats pour from the caves near the ruins at dusk so that they blacken the sky. Among the many unexcavated mounds and ruins at El Zotz is the Diablo Pyramid, from which you can see on a clear day the roofcombs of the temples of Tikal.
Trips to El Zotz can be extended to include a trek to Tikal through dense forest. You can enter the site by an unpaved road till Cruce Dos Aguadas (1 hour) and continue a path all the way up to El Zotz which will take about 5 hours or 20 km.
El Mirador: Situated at 100 km north of Tikal, the ruins of El Mirador can be found. The metrópolis of El Mirador houses a number of buildings which are superior to others found in other Mayan sites.
One of these buildings is the biggest pyramid ever constructed by the Mayas: The Pyramid El Tigre, which is 60 m high while the base covers 18,000 sq meters. El Tigre's twin, La Danta, though technically smaller, soars higher because it is built on a rise, 105 m above sea level. Looking out from the top, you have a magnificent view over the Mayan forests. The site can be reached by a 82 km road to the community Carmelita where a hike of two days or 15 hours will lead you to El Mirador.
