The Volcán Pacaya is not only one of the country’s most active volcanoes; it is also one of the most picturesque, rising to an elevation of 2552 m (8373 ft.). The volcano and surrounding areas were designated a National Park in the 1960s, protecting the surrounding natural environment integrity and providing breathtaking views of the park’s natural beauty.

Located within the park is the Laguna de Calderas, a lake formed in the volcano’s former crater and provides clean drinking water to neighboring communities.

Volcán Pacaya erupts almost continuously, sometimes spewing gas, at other times ash and lava. Depending on the volcano conditions, climbers can sometimes climb right to the top while at other times must stop further down. Either way, visitors take scenic volcanic sand paths up the side of the volcano, enjoying the unique flora and fauna that grow out of the fertile soil and catching glimpses of some of the steam baths creating by the heat.

The trail to the top of the volcano is steep but accessible for those in good health. for adults and older children. There is also the option to ride a horse, part of the way.

Depending on the volcanic activity, there is the possibility of viewing lava flow from time to time. In fact, in some places, the ground is hot enough to roast marshmallows! The view from the top on a clear day is impressive. It includes a view of the Laguna de Calderas and the Agua, Fuego, and Acatenango volcanoes and the surrounding areas.
