A brief description of Chichicastenango

The “holy city” of Chichicastenango was settled by indigenous nobility fleeing the Spanish in Utatlan or Q’umarkaj the Quiches capital in the late 1520’s.

However, the Indians were not able to avoid the conquest, for decades they continuing worshipping their Maya deities as well as the ones from the Catholic faith, creating their famous cathedral of Santo Tomas in the exact location of a pre-existing Maya Altar.

Currently, the atmosphere of incense spew forth as fervent worshippers, and influential spiritual elders throughout Guatemala gather to perform a mixture of Maya and Catholic rituals within and on the entry steps (which cover the original Maya temple steps).

Market days (Thursday and Sundays) offer by far the most extraordinary scenery to visitors.

A formidable collage of merchants, as well as their crafts, crowd the church plaza while ornately attired men of the Cofradia (spiritual leaders) execute rituals in front of the entrance. Multi-colored groups of women line the steps nearly buried under vibrantly striped weavings and a bunch of flowers.
