The explosion of the Loma Caldera volcano covered Joya de Ceren. This explosion allowed them to keep their central software-Hispanic civilization for hundreds of years. Exciting adventure to the top of the Ilamatepec Volcano (70 km approx.), an aerial scenic gem. It’s the highest and most prominent coastal mountain range, 2.365 meters above sea level.
The road is narrow and difficult to traverse. There are several resting points. As you each upper altitude, the winds are much more robust, and you will be enveloped in clouds. Soon, you will arrive at the top.
The crater has an emerald–green lagoon in its interior. There is also a slight waterfall of crystalline water. From this point, you will have a fantastic view of the Coatepeque Lake, Izalco Volcano, the Cerro Verde Volcano, and the Pacific Ocean. The view is just impressive.
In the morning, you will kayak on Lake Atitlan, then continue by boat towards Cerro de Oro and start up the hill for a two-hour hike.
Then we will transfer you by boat to Santiago Atitlan. One of the main attractions in this village is, without any doubt, the visit to Maximon, the pagan God of the natives who carries cigarettes and liquor and receive all kinds of offerings from the visitors.
After lunch, we will go back to Panajachel.
