With steep cliffs and an internal cave system, the mountains possess two of the most impressive characteristic of El Zotz: bats and scenic views. As the afternoon ends, thousands of bats leave the caves from the mountain’s interior, forming dark clouds and filling the air with their shrieks and the sound of millions of wings flapping quickly.
This bat spectacle at the site is one of the most impressive experiences of the Guatemalan fauna, giving the site its name “Zotz” which means “bat” in several Maya languages, including Itza.
The hike, which lasts approximately one hour, goes through the archaeological site, called El Diablo. From these sites, located on the higher parts of the mountains, you can enjoy magnificent views of the Peten jungle, including a view of the top of Tikal’s Temple IV.
