9-Day Belize Family Adventure Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Belize and Private Transfer to Cayo
A Martsam representative meets your family at Philip S. W. Goldson International Airport. Continue by private vehicle to your hotel in the Cayo District.
After checking in, the remainder of the day is free. This gives everyone time to settle in and recover from the journey before the active days begin.
Day 2: A Flexible Day in the Cayo District
Today can be adjusted around your family’s interests and energy. Depending on the selected hotel and final itinerary, possibilities may include canoeing, river tubing, guided nature walks, birdwatching, mountain biking, swimming or yoga.
Families may also keep part of the day free. Your proposal will identify which activities are included and which remain optional.
Day 3: Horseback Riding and Xunantunich
Ride through farmland and forest trails toward Xunantunich, one of Belize’s best-known ancient Maya cities. The approach gives the family time outdoors before exploring the archaeological site with a private guide.
The guide adapts the visit to the children and adults traveling. Together, you will examine the city’s plazas, temples and surrounding landscape while learning how Xunantunich developed within the Maya world.
Horseback riding depends on age, mobility and confidence. Martsam can arrange an alternative approach to the site when riding does not suit every family member.
Day 4: Maya Food and Chocolate Traditions
Spend the day learning how cacao and food remain connected with Maya history and family life in Belize. The experience includes a chocolate demonstration, preparation of a regional meal and a hands-on chocolate-making activity.
This is an interactive day for families. The explanations and level of participation can be adjusted for the children and adults traveling.
The afternoon remains free after returning to the hotel.
Day 5: Cave Experience and Transfer to Hopkins
Leave the Cayo District and travel toward Hopkins on Belize’s southern coast. Stop along the route to explore St. Herman’s Cave with a guide.
The experience introduces the cave’s geology, natural setting and importance within the Maya cultural landscape. Access conditions and the physical requirements should be reviewed for every family before confirmation.
After the visit, continue to Hopkins and settle into your coastal hotel. A gentler activity or direct transfer can be arranged when the cave does not suit everyone traveling.
Day 6: Monkey River Wildlife Experience
Travel by boat along Monkey River with a local guide. The river and surrounding forest support birds, iguanas, crocodiles, howler monkeys and other wildlife.
Sightings depend on the season, weather and the movement of wild animals, so no particular species can be guaranteed. The guide helps the family observe the habitat and understand the relationships between the river, forest and nearby communities.
Return to Hopkins for a free afternoon.
Day 7: A Flexible Day in Hopkins
Keep the day free for the beach, hotel activities and time together. Families who want another guided experience may consider a Garifuna cultural and cooking activity, subject to availability.
The day remains flexible so the journey includes time to rest rather than placing a scheduled excursion into every available hour.
Day 8: Coastal Time or an Optional Adventure
Enjoy another unscheduled day in Hopkins or select an optional outdoor experience. Possibilities may include ziplining or a guided outing in the Mayflower Bocawina area.
The appropriate activity depends on the children’s ages, physical requirements, weather and current operating conditions. Martsam reviews these details before adding an experience to the confirmed itinerary.
Day 9: Departure from Belize
Transfer privately from Hopkins to the Dangriga airstrip. Take a domestic flight to Philip S. W. Goldson International Airport for your onward international connection.
The flight and transfer schedule will be coordinated with your international departure. If the connection does not provide a safe time margin, Martsam will recommend a different arrangement.

Yes. The journey can be extended to include Ambergris Caye, another suitable island or additional coastal time. Adding several nights usually provides a more comfortable balance between inland exploration and reef activities.
Can this family trip include Tikal or Guatemala?
Yes. Belize connects naturally with Tikal and Guatemala’s Petén region. A longer journey can also include Antigua Guatemala and Lake Atitlán. The complete route should allow enough time for border formalities and regional transportation.
